An Exercise in Confidence

Good day to you and welcome. Thanks for visiting. We’re glad to have you along for the ride to a better you!

In previous post we looked at self confidence and how we have control over it. We set the bar’s height. I thought a good thing might be to provide an exercise to assist in creating the feeling of self confidence whenever we needed it. Does that sound like something you would use?

This can be done whenever you have 3-5 minutes that you can just relax and simply think to yourself.

Start by closing your eyes and recalling a time that you felt super confident… a time that you knew what you were doing, you felt powerful and masterful and when the experience was over you felt extremely happy and pleased with your achievement.

If you are finding it hard to think of a time, ask yourself “If I was extremely confident, what would that look like? How would I feel and what would I be doing?” Using this method is just as powerful as remembering a specific time in your history!

Now (re)experience that scene through your own eyes. Don’t look at yourself in the event, rather be yourself as it takes place. This is extremely important!

Notice what you are seeing. Is it moving pictures or a snapshot? If a snapshot what happens next? Create more pictures so you get a movie. Make the picture a bit brighter, and then a bit more brighter. Notice the colours. Are you seeing the experience in colour or black and white? Make it as colourful as possible.

As you are seeing the pictures, notice what sounds you may be hearing. Are people talking? Are you talking? As this experience of confidence takes place what noises are involved. Do they have a rhythm, a beat, and are they loud or soft? Where are the sounds located… all around in 3D or from one particular area?

The next thing to notice is the feelings you have as you (re)experience this event. Are you happy? Excited? Motivated? How about feelings inside? Do you have a warm feeling in your chest or a feeling of relaxation in your shoulders? Just notice what you feel emotionally and physically as you see what you see and hear what you hear.

Now build up the pictures and sounds and feeling so that the event becomes more vivid. Make it brighter, clearer in picture and sound, more powerful emotionally and once you’ve done that, do it even more. Make it so that it is the best experience you’ve had, and then even more so. Build it… more colour, more contrast, more emotion, more physicality, more, more, more.

Eventually it will become one of the most powerful experiences and you’ll feel you just can’t make it any better. As this happens, (and this is the most important step of the task) we need to anchor the experience. This needs to be a tactile AND audible event. For example, touch your thumb and fourth fingers together on each hand as you say out loud “confidence”. Or you could punch the air (tactile) while saying with passion “Yeah”.

You can use anything you like… a touch on your left arm, a tap on your thigh, a squeeze of your nose with a guttural roar or a sound effect or a word. The thing to note is that whenever you do this combination anytime in the future, you will feel how you felt when you set it! So make the anchor something you can do in public. If you are about to give a presentation and would like to feel confident, you’ll want an anchor that doesn’t involve jumping up and down while howling! An anchor can be discreet, but ensure that it is also something that doesn’t happen everyday like shaking hands or a touch on the shoulder.

Know that the more often you follow this exercise and use the same anchor the stronger and more powerful it becomes. You can feel confident instantly!

This also works for any other state you would like including happiness, motivation, calmness, powerful, anything you like. Just set the anchor in a different way for each state.
