Hey there, welcome back. Today’s “Thought For The Day” is something that if you take inside and make it a part of your everyday life, will alter and enhance every single relationship that you are a part of!
Parents, kids, siblings, in-laws
Boss, colleagues, clients, suppliers, customers
Neighbours, community, etc
We’ve discussed in the past about the 3 general ways people use to represent their surroundings –
Visual – they see pictures of what they are thinking
Auditory – they hear voices and sounds of their surroundings
Kinaesthetic – they feel their reality
If you would like more info on these “Representation Systems”, simply check out the articles in the archive.
The great thing is that everybody unconsciously gives hints as to the way that they do process information in their heads and with a bit of directed attention and a little practice, you can utilise this knowledge to help in your communication with them!
People that are visual will use words and phrases such as…
I see what you mean.
Uh oh, this looks bad.
He has a dark character.
Kids today have a bright future.
People using the auditory Rep System may say things like…
I hear what you are saying.
This sounds like bad news.
His silence is deafening.
That would be music to their ears.
Finally, people who experience life by feeling will say things like…
That feels about right.
That’s sending shivers down my spine!
He rubs me the wrong way.
Let’s get moving.
What would be a great idea would be to listen for the next few days to the words that people you interact with use in day to day communication. Listening out for and getting an idea of which representation system is preferred for your peers will help you greatly with your communication skills.
Next time we’ll look at how we can use this insight ourselves.
Until then, have an awesome few days and live life as much as you can!
