How To… Feel Any Way You Wish in 5 Minutes (incl. Template)

Isn’t it interesting how there are times in our lives when we wish we felt a particular way for that particular moment?

I remember a time early in my speaking career when I was invited to speak to a small group of around 20 staff about how they can pull together to achieve big things for the company. There was some angst between three particular staff members, and they had managed to form factions within the rest of the team.

As you can imagine, this put pressure on me not only to help reinvigorate and unite the team, but also to maintain control through the presentation and not have the opposing sides come to battle!

I needed to feel powerful and in control, and in the five minutes leading to starting the workshop I took the opportunity to ready myself in that state – powerful and in control. I utilised a technique known as “The Circle of Excellence” as it is one of my favourite techniques and it can be used for any situation and to achieve any feeling that will benefit the coming experience.

Would you like to feel confidence, calm, powerful, enthusiastic, relaxed, funny, in charge or simply at ease whenever you like? Well, here is step-by-step how to utilise “The Circle of Excellence”.

Part One – Creating your “Circle of Excellence”

  1. Decide exactly what state or emotion you’d like to feel for the upcoming experience.
  2. Find somewhere quiet and where you can be alone for a few minutes. (After some practice you can do this in the middle of a crowded room and no-one will notice!)
  3. Close your eyes and think of a time when you have felt this emotion in the past. If it is a new emotion, or it needs to be stronger than what you have already experienced, pretend to be someone you know who has this emotion available to them and think of an experience they have had when it has been displayed by them.
  4. With your eyes closed, picture that time/experience when that emotion was available. What can you see? See it as vividly as possible. What can you hear? What do you feel? Re-experience that time as though it is happening again.
  5. As you are re-experiencing this event and feeling that emotion or state coming on strong, imagine on the ground in front of you a circle big enough for you to step into.
  6. When you are ready, and feeling the emotion really strongly whether it be calm or relaxed, or power or massive energy, step into the circle on the ground. As you do, feel the circle filling with the emotion you’re looking to attain.
  7. As the circle starts filling you may notice the emotion has a colour, and as the circle receives more of the emotion, the circle fills with the colour and becomes more vibrant as this colour appears.
  8. Keep experiencing the past event until the circle can no longer handle any more of that emotion. It is chock-a-block full of that particular experience.
  9. When the circle is full, step out of the circle leaving that emotion in there.

You now have a ‘primed’ “Circle of Excellence”. Shake off the feeling of the past experience. You have completed the first part of enjoying this emotion whenever you like! The circle on the ground is ready for you whenever you need it. When you’ve finished with it, you can fold it up and put it in your pocket ready for another time! But right now, let’s test it.

Part Two – Using your “Circle of Excellence”

  1. If it is not on the ground already, pull the specific “Circle of Excellence” out of your pocket and throw it on the ground in front of you.
  2. See it land strongly and in place with the colour of the emotion you’re after pulsing ready for you.
  3. When you are ready, step into the circle and feel that experience and emotion instantly wash over you – the colour covering your feet and working its way up your legs, filling your torso and eventually completely touching every fibre of your body.
  4. As this is taking place, you can feel this emotion installing itself stronger and stronger within you, ready for you no matter the event or situation that may be about to arise.
  5. Once you are fully enveloped with this emotion, look down at the circle and notice that it is still brimming with this resource. Even though you have utilised its power, the circle only gets more concentrated with this emotion.
  6. Noticing you now have this resource available to you, step out of the circle and ensure to pick it up, fold it neatly and put it in your pocket for later.
  7. Now experience the coming moments filled with the emotional state you have assimilated.

This is a very powerful technique that I use multiple times every day.

I was coaching a client who was finding it difficult to sleep because they were fraught with anxiety. The more they concerned themselves with being unable to sleep, the more anxious they became. I led this person through creating a “Circle of Excellence” that was filled with ‘peace’ and ‘calm’ (yes, you can have circles with multiple states and colours!), and the next time I saw this client, they explained they had slept 9 hours solid for each of the two nights since creating the circle, and rather than stepping into the circle just prior to getting into bed, they had stretched the circle and laid it over them like a blanket enveloping them in a peace and calm space.

Create your very own “Circle of Excellence”. Create as many as you need. I have created so many now I have lost count, and with practice, I am able now to throw a circle down as I’m walking through a door, and as I walk through it, I pretty much instantly gain the state I’d like.
