One of the greatest discussion points you hear when looking at positive psychology or personal development is around doubts and fears. In fact one of my most favourite quotes is…
Your doubts and fears will stop you from achieving more than your failures ever will.
It is well known that doubts can paralyse, people can get completely ‘stuck’ by having a doubt hang in their thinking… looking at all the options and possibilities; wondering what could happen.
I was thinking about doubts over the last few days, and something struck me… not like “wow, that’s interesting”, but more like “oh my goodness… how have I never seen this before?!”
There is an extremely easy way to get rid of doubt; to never, EVER get stopped by doubt again – ever!
Before I give this little piece of information that may just change your life, let’s have a quick look at what doubt is.
Doubt, by definition from dictionary.com, is
to be uncertain about; consider questionable or unlikely; hesitate to believe
Read that definition again, a few times, and let it reeaaally sink in (I’ll wait).
There is one feature of each of the three elements presented that are common. Are you ready for it? This realisation really caught me by surprise.
Uncertainty – Consider questionable – Hesitate to believe – all of these are about the way somebody thinks.
When we have doubts, it is what is going on in our head, questioning, posing, thinking… To have a doubt about something ultimately means you’re not sure about it one way or the other. You can or you can’t, you should or you shouldn’t, it might be hot or it might be cold, it might rain or it might be dry, you might get it right or you might get it wrong – doubts are only the thoughts we have about the state or outcome of an experience.
What this means is that we now have the answer as to how to never be held back by doubts from this moment forward.
The answer is to apply activity. It’s as simple as that.
Make the decision to simply give whatever you’re mulling over a try. If it works, great, you know you can do it. If it doesn’t work, great, you know you can’t do it. Either way you know how to move forward from there – continue on strong and/or get more information on how to do it.
Think about the last doubt you had, and say to yourself – did you get over the doubt? And if so, how did you do that? Was it by taking action?
“The way to release doubt is to do it”. Apply action. It does not matter about the level of success; you can deal with that afterwards, but by committing to action, the doubt disappears because you know definitively one way or the other!
When you next feel stuck and have doubts swirling through your mind, do it – just do it, and then build on whatever the outcome is. You might surprise yourself!
