Hello, and welcome back to the site. Today I thought we’d look at reality. We’ve been discussing how each one of us has our own reality because of the filters we place on the information arriving through our senses. (Check out the archives if you need to catch up). A question I’d like to throw out (and would love your feedback on) is can we create our own reality?
Let’s have a short refresher…
Information from our surroundings is bombarding us at around 4 billion bits per second. This is a stack of info that we need to process, so our brains distort, delete and generalise this vast data so it becomes a more manageable 2000 bits. What information gets thrown out or shrunk down?
This is where our history comes in to play. Through past experiences we have made rules about how things work. These rules then get run on every second’s reality to “break it down”. Let’s look at an example. I have a rule that, briefly stated, says that if someone is hurting or upset, I need to comfort them and fix the situation. At some time in my past, I had one, if not more, experiences where I saw that pain is wrong and I should help.
If someone is crying or angry, I need to fix it. That is an admirable rule, don’t you think? I can’t tell you how many times this rule has got me in trouble! I have had to learn that sometimes people just need to express their feelings, they don’t need a solution, they may already have one, but verbalising how they feel is an outlet they use as a release.
We all create these rules for ourselves to help us process our reality. Most rules are created between the ages of five and fifteen at a time that we experience a lot of new stuff.
What we don’t realise is that in our adult life, these rules are the reason we often get stuck in a rut or maybe get unhappy with where we are and feel like we need a change.
PLEASE NOTE: THESE RULES ARE NOT SET IN CONCRETE AND NEED TO EVOLVE AS WE LEARN MORE ABOUT OURSELVES AND OUR LIVES.
As adults we tend not to learn new rules and this leads us to trouble. A rule we created when we were five about how a teacher is always right and that authority is king, may hold you back in later life because you always look for the authority figure and then believe everything they say. This may also hold you back from believing that you are an authority figure yourself, hence never getting the promotion to that management position you’ve earned!
Please, please, please, realise and understand that these rules need to be reviewed and adjusted based on the experiences we’ve had since they were created, and the way society has changed since the rule was made.
Another name for these rules… BELIEFS.
Be prepared, nay, ensure to make time to review and adjust your beliefs. If you feel stuck, it is because of a belief you have. Simple as that.
You can change your reality by changing the beliefs you use to distort, delete and generalise the information you receive through your senses every second of every day.
This means that you control your reality!
Have an awesome day. Know that you can control how you feel at any time simply by looking at the beliefs that have helped you get to your “now” and be prepared to accept that the belief may not be the best one for you and change it!
