The History of “NOW”

The most important time of day…

Many years ago there was a movie which affected me in many ways. I have watched it many times – how many I’m unsure now, I lost count at one hundred and six.

Being in my teens when it was released, the movie “Back to the Future” with Michael J Fox and Christopher Lloyd saw a young man sent backwards through time thirty years only to stumble across his parents and unfortunately put his own existence at risk. For as long as I can remember, I have dreamt about what it would be like travelling both into the past and forward to the future. How I might be able to influence things as they are now, and to discover how things might turn out… oh the thinks you can think!

There is one important thing to understand about the concept of time – it is the fact it is merely a concept! Yes we have a past, and yes we have a future, but all we have available to us is now… right now… and now… and now… and the now we had when you started reading this post has gone and you can never get that back.

All we have is right NOW.

Our lives are merely a series of moments, and many of us squander and waste these parcels of time. Every moment of time we have had is gone – drifting on the winds of history, revered memories. Our history is every moment we have experienced.

We cannot change that. We cannot cause an effect on our past. We are unable to adjust what has happened to bring us to this point in time right now.

But we have the power to affect right now. We can apply action to this moment, to this second, to this experience right now. And once a lot of us realise this, and understand there is no power in the past, but only in this very moment we may take the action required to regain control of our moments rather than simply letting them wash over us. Our focussed efforts on each moment provides power, control and a sense of achievement that can be the highest of the highs.

Recognising that it is not the end of the journey that provides the pride and satisfaction, it is not the attainment of the ‘goal’ that is the reward, but the process – those moments in time that arrive and depart with us achieving just that little bit more, having that focus of conscious effort that provides the sense of fulfilment and growth over and over and over again with each moment that provides true happiness in one’s life.

No-one can influence the past – no-one can set the future – we all have this very second, this very moment to make life outstanding so you can…
