What Was Going Through Her Mind?

Have you ever stumbled when striving for a goal? Have you ever hit a wall, or had so much happening in your life that it was just too hard to go on?

Are there goals that you have not yet achieved, but have been delayed because of circumstances beyond your control? Something has come up that has meant your goal has needed to be put on hold…

There is a saying that simply says…

Burn the boats…

There have been many different stories and interpretations on the origin of this quote, however the concept has always been the same. The idea is framed around an army sailing to and landing on enemy territory. Once all the stores and armies had disembarked, the order was given to burn the boats. This meant the only way home was to defeat the enemy and use their ships. There was no leaving this land until victory was achieved.

What could we achieve if there were no excuses? What could we achieve if there was no way out – no option but success? If along the journey an obstacle appears and there was no way you were stopping – “watch out obstacle… I’m coming through”!

Amazing things can be achieved when there is no other way but success. Amazing things have been achieved when your only end is the goal.

If you have not heard the name “Heather Dorniden”, then prepare to see something that cannot be unseen.

There is something powerful about placing yourself in Heather’s shoes… what was she thinking as she was heading for the ground? Some would have thought “there is no coming back from going down in a 600mtr race” and that would have been the end of it. Some would have thought “all those hours spent on the track and it’s all to waste, all flushed away in a moment”.  And then there are those who don’t think – who just get back up and keep going. What belief do you have in yourself, and will you ever know if you have the boats to get back home?

Let’s try something from this moment forward. In life, most of us use the word “excuse” as a noun – “A reason or explanation given to justify an action”. What if we were only ever to use the word “excuse” as a verb – “release from a duty or requirement” – I excuse myself from continuing to attempt to achieve my goal. Do we really want to release ourselves from our goals?

Every time we give up on our goal, every time we let something stop us from achieving everything we want to achieve, we are actually excusing ourselves from the attainment of success.

Burn the boats; there is no option but success; NO EXCUSES! Go get it – whatever it is, and…
