There is a saying my mother used to impart to me that went something along the lines of “How do you eat an elephant? – One bite at a time”.
As a kid I don’t think I completely understood the message my mum was hoping to give me… I thought it was an obvious statement that you can’t consume or attain a large goal all at once; to quote another saying she loved, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step”. Our goals need to be broken down.
More recently, I have recognised a different message… rather than focussing on the entire ‘project’, sure, break it down into small chunks, but even more than that, recognise that it is going to take activity to get to the goal.
‘One bite at a time’ for me now is not so much a focus on breaking the project or goal down into manageable pieces (which is still very important), but is more about simply starting to work towards it. One bite, then another, then another – continual focussed activity is the only way to eventually finish the elephant.
It was one of those light bulb moments as this thought presented itself. Ultimately, it does not matter one iota about the size of the final goal, or the sub-goals you break it down into, or even the size of the sub-sub goals… as long as you are chewing you are getting closer to eating your elephant.
Are you chewing? Do you have a mouthful at the moment, and if not, why not? Did you take a bite sometime today, or has it been a while since you’ve taken a bite?
